William J and Catherine Doherty

This photo shows William J and Catherine Doherty in front of their homestead, west of Bowden, Alberta, Canada. Notice how stern looking they were when photos were taken in the "old days"! Catherine could be wearing a pin-on watch or brooch and, of course, William had the pocket watch. Robert Doherty figures the picture would have been taken about 1909.
(NOTE): This, of course, means it will be 100 years old when we have our 2009 Reunion in Hanna, Alberta, Canada.

The Doherty Family Homestead west of Bowden, Alberta

The source of this picture is believed to be the Olds Gazette. It is an excellent picture of the homestead but you will notice the windows are boarded up. The building to the right is the "root cellar", as my mother (Mary Ann/Marion - Doherty Hughes) used to call it.

BJ received this picture of the Doherty homestead in January 1957 from Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Sheffield, neigbors of William and Catherine. It was a pleasure to meet this couple who had just celebrated their 65th Anniversary. The Sheffields seemed to think that it was other neighbors sitting in front of the house. Although it isn't too clear there is a dog laying near the corner of the house. The homestead was listed as NW 16 R1 W5 T34 and the title was issued August 29, 1895.
